Sirius
Architectural ambition and Australian structural steel innovation were central to transforming the Sirius Building – a heritage-listed Sydney landmark – into a standout example of large-scale, sustainable urban renewal.
Apollo Fabrication Group brought advanced design, fabrication and installation capability to deliver approximately 600 tonnes of steelwork for the luxury residential development in The Rocks.
Apollo’s structural steel package comprised three key elements, each with its own fabrication and installation challenge and response:
- Apartment pods: 35 modular pods, each approximately 5m x 5m and up to 15 metres long, forming the new apartments added across the top of the building.
- Balconies and hoods: 120 copper-clad prefabricated steel balcony and hood structures designed to connect to the retained building structure.
- Lift steel cores: four steel-framed cores integrated with the reinforced concrete system.
- Pool frames: steel framework for seven pools integrated above ground level within the building’s structure.
To overcome the challenges of a constrained CBD retrofit, Apollo adopted a modularised construction approach, combining off-site prefabrication, trial assembly and bespoke connection strategies to streamline delivery. This included modular pod splice details and pin-guided balcony installation, improving safety, reducing site labour and converting a highly complex steel package into a buildable solution.
