Apollo Fabrication Group’s commitment to environmental responsibility is as strong as steel, according to the Australian Steel Institute’s new sustainability program.
A regional powerhouse providing structural steel solutions across the Eastern Seaboard, Apollo Fabrication is the first and only steel fabricator in NSW to achieve the highest standard of certification (Level 3) under the ASI’s Steel Sustainability Australia scheme.
Apollo Fabrication CEO Caleb Jackson said the company, which is planning to expand its Young headquarters, is pleased to set the benchmark in sustainable steel fabrication.
“A family-owned business, we have always operated with a strong sense of responsibility to our people and community and set our bar high in terms of the quality, safety and environmental performance of our products and our operations,” Mr Jackson said.
“Our focus on sustainability has seen us carve a niche in steel design, fabrication and installation for large-scale building projects including Green Star buildings like UTS Central and North Connex Control Centre in Sydney.
“The Steel Sustainability Australia certification supports our construction industry partners to advance their sustainability goals.”
Mr Jackson said the Steel Sustainability Australia certification program covers the entire steel supply chain from steel producers through to fabrication and installation and is a recognised initiative under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Responsible Product Framework principles.
The certification process assessed Apollo Fabrication’s operations against a range of criteria including the measures the company has put in place to minimise the environmental impact of its operations.
“The energy efficiency of our fabrication facility, responsible supply chain management and commitment to minimising waste across our production cycle were key factors in our successful certification,” Mr Jackson said.
“Over 30% of the energy used to produce our structural steel products is generated by solar, reducing our carbon footprint.”
Another crucial element of Apollo Fabrication’s sustainability efforts is the careful selection of like-minded suppliers.
“We source our steel from suppliers who share our commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability best practice.
“We also recycle 86% of our waste, contributing to a circular economy through our partnerships with steel recycling merchants and recycling facilities he said.
Apollo Fabrication produces hundreds of tonnes of steel products each week, with Mr Jackson equating their output to building a Bunnings Warehouse every 2-3 weeks. This scale of operation underscores the company’s capability to meet large-scale project demands while adhering to stringent practices.
Mr Jackson also highlighted the proposed expansion of the Apollo Fabrication facility on Telegraph Road, Young.
“The planned expansion will further position us to win contracts in both the government and private sectors, boosting the employment and training opportunities on offer for Young and the surrounding region,” Mr Jackson said.
In addition to the Steel Sustainability Australia Level 3 certification, Apollo Fabrication’s quality, safety and environmental management systems are certified to AS/NZS ISO Standards. In February 2024, Apollo Fabrication also attained certification under Steelwork Compliance Australia, the independent auditing and certification authority for structural steelwork.
